How to wash a weighted blanket without ruining it

Weighted blankets are straightforward in concept — glass beads or poly pellets sewn into a quilted shell to add weight. In practice, washing one requires knowing exactly what the fill material is, because each type responds differently to heat and agitation.

Check the fill first

Glass beads: machine-washable in cold water, low-spin cycle. They're heavy and will stress the drum on high spin. Use a large machine — the blanket needs room to move.

Poly pellets: machine-washable in warm water. More resilient than glass to heat, but still shouldn't go above 80°F or the pellets deform.

Steel shot or iron: not machine-washable. Rusts. Spot clean only.

The machine size problem

A 15-pound weighted blanket in a residential 4.5 cu ft drum is borderline. The blanket can't agitate freely when it's that full. The edges get clean; the center doesn't. You end up with detergent residue in the fill and uneven cleaning throughout.

A weighted blanket that doesn't dry completely in 24 hours will develop mildew in the fill. You won't smell it at first. You'll smell it two weeks later and not know where it's coming from.

The drying process matters as much as the wash

Dry on low heat. Pause every 30 minutes and re-distribute the fill manually. A 15-pound blanket will take 2–3 hours in a residential dryer. Don't rush it. Damp fill inside a quilted shell is a mildew incubator.

If your blanket is over 20 pounds, a residential machine isn't the right tool. Commercial machines at our McKinney facility handle the weight and size correctly — and the commercial dryers run long enough to dry the fill completely in one pass.
